Summer Job Opportunities 2024

Maidstone & Area Historical Society is accepting resumes for summer employment at the Maidstone Bicentennial Museum until Friday, June 15, 2024. Looking for applicants with adaptability, collaboration, communication, creativity, innovation and digital skills.  Employment is 8 consecutive weeks starting Tuesday, July 2, 2024.  Schedule is Tuesday to Saturday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm a total of 35 hours a week.  Applicants must be between 15 and 30 years of age in accordance to the CSJ outline.

Assistant Museum Curator
*Assist in recording digital artifact inventory 
*Assist in producing digital artifact inventory
*Assist in production of promotional video of museum, Heritage Native Gardens and events
*Assist in production of promotional pieces for various social media
*Conduct integrative tours
*Conduct research and record information on museum archives
*Assist in interruptive display and new educational programming 
*Assist in events and fundraisers
*Assist in light maintenance such as dusting, vacuuming, cleaning glass cases, watering gardens
*Adjust plans as needed based on emerging deadlines
*Work in collaboration with supervisor, mentor, staff and volunteers

Landscape Architect
*Assist in maintenance of Heritage Native Gardens in ecological friendly methods of weeding, planting, mulching, fertilizing, organic natural spraying and watering
*Assist in research and teaching of new sustainable initiatives and ecological impact native plants have on our environment
*Research and develop a new visitor guide on the Heritage Native Gardens
*Assist in researching and the development of a Seed Library
*Assist in seasonal Butterfly House teaching metamorphosis and conservation of Manarchs
*Conduct interpretive tours of Heritage Native Gardens
*Assist in events and fundraisers
*Assist in light maintenances such as vacuuming, dusting etc
*Adjust plans as needed based on emerging deadlines 
*Work in collaboration with supervisor, mentor, staff and volunteers

Camp Councillor
*Assist curator in development of children's day camp programs
* Assist in prep work for children's day camps teaching local history, and environmental education based on Heritage Native Gardens
* Assist in supervising children at the day camps
*Will take part in historic re-enactment camps for childrens day camps and public education days 
* Assist in events and fundraisers
* Assist in light maintenance such as vacuuming, dusting, picking up yard etc.
*Adjust plans as needed based on emerging deadlines
*Work in collaboration with supervisor, mentor, staff and volunteers

Easter Colouring Contest Rules

Easter Colouring Contest Rules

1. Only colouring sheets that arrive at the Maidstone Museum by March 16, 2024, will be judged.  If dropping off sheets after museum hours please place them in the white mailbox marked 1093.

2. All information on the bottom of the colouring sheet must be filled out to be judged.  Please print.

3. There are 3 age categories 3 - 6, 7-9, 10-12.  Only these ages will be judged. 

4. You can use any colouring media you wish, markers, crayons, colour pencils, paint

5. Be creative this is your colouring sheet

6. Be a good sport.

7.  Winners will be announced on March 23, 10:30 am at the Easter Egg-xtraviganza.    The judge's decisions are final.

March Break Activities

March Break Information

February 12 - Introduction to Weaving - this workshop is open for ages 8 and up.  Come and learn the basics of loom weaving and a little history behind weaving.  You will complete a mug rug in class, plus enough materials to complete more at home.  The fee is $20 which includes your peg loom and materials.

February 13 - Build a Log House - children will tour the museum's barn to see all the tools used to build a log cabin then go inside the museum to build a popsicle replica of a log cabin.  The fee is $10 and includes all materials

February 14 - Our weekly Campfire Story Time continues with delightful stories read in our library around our crackling light-up campfire complete with the sound of crickets. After story time children will decorate a bookmark and colour a colour sheet about the story.  Ages 3-6. Free event

February 15 - Native Garden Workshop - this workshop is to bring awareness to the importance that Native Plants play in feeding pollinators and helping to keep our ecosystem healthy.  You will receive tips on how to create various types of Native Plant gardens and suggested plants that can be used.  You will then plant some native plant seeds to go home in your mini greenhouse.  The fee is $10 and includes a handout and all materials.
